To those who would like to apply for a postdoctoral position in the Ohtani laboratory:

  • Welcome to the Ohtani lab website. . We receive many e-mails inquiring about the possibility for postdoctoral positions in our laboratory, however, Professor Ohtani is unable to respond to all of the inquiries and hopes for your kind understanding regarding this matter. Here, some relevant information has been posted for your reference and we hope that it will be helpful in answering your questions.
  • Application to JSPS ( Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences ): To apply for a JSPS postdoctoral fellowship to support research work at the Ohtani lab, a recommendation by Professor Bunsho Ohtani is required. However, recommendations will only be offered after an interview with those who have the required qualifications or have been recommended by a close colleague or collaborator. Prof. Ohtani offers his sincere apologies for not responding to those who contact him about openings without an interview or an introduction.
  • Also, when openings are available, the Ohtani lab is able to offer postdoctoral positions to researchers, foreign or Japanese, who are living in Japan and can come in for an interview. The openings are announced only in Japan.
  • An opportunity to work in our lab (Hokkaido University): Positions are available for researchers from China who belong to the following universities in the provinces of Quinghai , Jiangxi , Ningxie , Hubei , Heilongliang , and Shangxi . Those who are interested should contact Professor Ohtani .

Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Research Student
  • Deadline for a recommendation from Hokkaido University: Usually, the end of March . (Should be confirmed).
  • Recommendation from home country: Since the deadlines and documents differ from country to country, please consult with the relevant agency or Japanese embassy in your country.

The following documents are needed to apply:

  1. Signed application form (Pages 1-4 of form.pdf/Print out on both sides)
  2. Certification of health (Page 5 of form.pdf) [included in the PDF file of the application form]
  3. Certification of final academic record (copy of master's degree or graduation certificate)
  4. Transcript of final academic record
  5. Certification of nationality (copy)
  6. Official recommendation letter from the dean or president of your university to the president of our university
  7. Photo taken within 6 months

Foreign Graduate Student

Entrance examinations for course studies leading to Master's and Doctorate Degrees at the Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science, Hokkaido University, are held twice a year at the end of August and the end of March. Applications are accepted in July and January for the new academic year starting in April.

JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • Deadline for applications to the Catalysis Research Center: The end of August for the program starting the following April / The end of April for the program starting in September.

Postdoctoral positions for foreign researchers in programs supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) are available at our lab. Applications can be submitted via two channels, one through our laboratory and the other from abroad through relevant nominating agencies.
