Apparatus
for photocatalytic reaction working from April 1999. This
apparatus has been made by Ohtani when he was working in
Kyoto University. The photograph was taken to use for a
pamphlet introducing our laboratory in Graduate School of
Environmental Earth Science, Hokkaido University for
students. The light from a mercury arc seems so intense, but
actually it is not so that there is few possibility of "snow
blindness". Please see also a part of the pamphlet
([68K]) introducing our laboratory (in Japanese).

We
have succeeded in fabrication of two-dimensional chiral
arrangement, "chiral surface", of an atropisomeric compound,
binaphthalenedithiol self-assembled on gold. We have shown
this picture to Professor
Rohrer, a Nobel Prize winner in the field of physics and
one of the pioneers of STM. This picture was shown on the
top page
(1999/2/6-3/3).

We
have much snow this winter season. She, Ohtani's wife, looks
like a trainer of horses. In order to prepare winter drive,
boots and a snow brush are indispensable. This picture was
shown on the top
page(1999/1/17-1999/2/5).

A
happy new year! This year is "rabbit" according to the
calendar in east Asia. Can you imagine rabbit by seeing this
"peace sign"? We would like to enjoy chemistry also in this
new year. This picture was shown on the top page
(1998/12/29-1999/1/16).

A
sign-board saying "Ohtani's Labratory" made by Ohtani's
brother-in-law, a painter-printer. This was a gift when
Ohtani became a research associate in Kyoto University, the
first academic carrier. This picture was shown on the top
page (1998/12/18-1998/12/28).
